Updates and Corrections

April 17, 2008

On p.18 of the Wave 2 Data Notes, the first paragraph of the section on Exceeding Drinking Guidelines incorrectly cited the guideline for women as “no more than 4 standard drinks on any day.” The correction is noted in bolded text below:

Exceeding Drinking Guidelines

The Wave 2 data set contains a number of variables that indicate whether the respondent exceeds the drinking guidelines recommended in NIAAA’s Physician Guidelines. These guidelines are gender specific: a) For men, no more than 14 standard drinks per week AND no more than 4 standard drinks on any day, and b) For women, no more than 7 standard drinks per week AND no more than 3 standard drinks on any day.

The variables described in this section and contained in the data file all reflect the correct weekly and daily drinking limits. The error only appears in the text of the data notes document and not in the data file.

On p.12 of the Wave 2 Data Notes, the approach for measuring body mass index (BMI) was misstated. In step four, height in centimeters is divided by 100 before it is squared, so that the denominator for BMI is height in meters squared rather than height in centimeters squared. The correction is noted in bolded text below:

BMI was calculated in the following steps:
1. height in centimeters = ((w2s1q41feet*12) + w2s1q41inches)*2.54
2. current weight in kilograms = w2s1q41pounds*0.4536
3. heaviest weight in kilograms = w2s1q42b*0.4536
4. body mass index = weight in kg / (height in cm/100)2
